Our October speaker is unable to fulfil her commitment. Yet another disappointment! But we have arranged for a really excellent replacement. Mr William Forrester will speak on 'The Howard Family of Arundel Castle and Castle Howard (Dukes of Norfolk)'

IN AID OF THE VILLAGE HALL

Our meeting on 8th July was held in the Village Hall.

Sadly, booked speaker, Mrs Sowter, was unable to come and we were most fortunate that Mr Vic Quayle very kindly stepped into the breach! His talked about Namibia which he sub-titled “First on the Left above South Africa”! The country is huge and consists largely of desert. It was first colonised by the Portuguese and then the Germans before gaining its independence in 1990 and becoming a member of the British Commonwealth. Mr Quayle visited Namibia in 1999, with his wife, and he entertained us with slides and stories of his trip. They visited the capital city, Windhoek, the Skeleton coast, so named because of the number of wrecks there (mostly pre 1950s), Sossusvlei (the place most visited by tourists, because of the magnificent apricot coloured sand dunes) and the Etosha National Park. They saw many animals in the wild, including springbok, lion, giraffe, rhino and cheetahs, sometimes rather too close for comfort! They saw very few native Namibians, but the land is very sparsely populated. It was a very entertaining and educational afternoon and we all much appreciated this insight into the world of deserts and the challenges of driving through sand storms and over the moving dunes.

Our next meeting will be on 12th September. The talk will be about the PDSA (Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals). Following our talk last month, on Osteoporosis, it was agreed by the members present that Churt WI would put forward a proposal for a resolution to the National Federation of Womens Institutes to propose to the Government the adoption of a national screening programme. The wording of this proposal will be presented at the September meeting.
