CHURT

Churt Village School

The school stands in the centre of Churt village, completely enclosed by its own playgrounds. It was built in 1870 and has been constantly updated over the years. At present the school has three classrooms, a large hall, staff rooms, kitchen and cloakrooms. The playground has individual games areas; there is an award winning wild-life garden which is used mainly for class 'fieldwork'. A games field is adjacent to the village recreation ground.

Aims and Objectives

As we are an Infant school we are able to provide a sheltered environment for the youngest children. The early establishment of security and confidence enables the children to participate with enjoyment in the learning process, and to develop spiritual and social
awareness espousing the Christian ethos. We appreciate that
children develop at different levels and come from a variety of backgrounds. We treat each child as an individual and aim to challenge the gifted as well as support the less able. We encourage the children to be independent learners, to
develop lively and enquiring minds which will enable them to reason, question and participate in discussion.

School Organisation

Since September 1995 St John's has had a 'one entry a year' policy. Children who will become five during the academic year will be admitted in the Autumn term. The youngest of these will attend only part-time initially. The school has three classrooms: one each for the reception year and academic years one and two. It is expected that children will remain together as they move up through the school.

ADMISSIONS POLICY

St John's is a Church of England school and seeks to hold true to the Christian traditions and practices this implies. It is also a school at the heart of a village community. We have tried to balance these two factors in determining the
entry criteria. The intention is that thirty children may be admitted to the
Reception Class each September. We welcome all applications' from the
village and surrounding areas, but in the event of being oversubscribed at or beyond the closing date, admissions will only be made on the basis of the
following criteria in the priorities given below:
Children who have brother(s) and or sister(s) attending the school up to and including the closing date for admissions in any year.
Children whose parents desire for them a Christian education and whose name(s) (A) is on the electoral roll of the Parish Church of St John the
Evangelist, Churt (B) is either on the electoral roll of another Anglican Church or on the membership roll of a Christian Church of another
denomination in communion with the Anglican Church. or (C) for whom St John's is the nearest CE Aided School. (If the family are recent arrivals into the village then the Church membership qualifications above will need to be in existence in the place from which they have come in the immediate past. If the school is oversubscribed in any of the above categories priority will be given on the basis of nearest to the school, ie distance by road.) Children who are nearest to the school (ie distance by road).
The Governors reserve the right to give priority to children with a
documented social or medical need* for this school and children looked after by the local authority. * The documented social or medical need must be
provided by agencies and to a standard which would be fully acceptable to an LEA.
Applications after the closing date will be considered strictly on the basis of the above criteria, as defined under CTE, [Churches Together in England] and CYTUN [Churches together in England and Wales]. Applications after the closing date will be considered strictlv on the basis of the above criteria (as defined under CTE [Churches together in England] and CYTUN [Churches together in England and Wales] available on request). If applicants after the closing date are unsuccessful in obtaining a place in the school, their names will be added to a waiting list and in the event of further vacancies occurring, will be offered a place strictly on the basis of the above criteria.
